Common mistakes
Is a US cup the same as a South African cup?
No. A US cup is 236.6 ml; a South African (metric) cup is 250 ml - 5.7% bigger. Fill SA cups for a US recipe and everything measured by the cup comes out about 6% heavy - enough to dry out a cake. Measure the ml shown, or use US cups.
Why does the converter not turn cups into grams?
Because a cup of flour weighs about 120 g spooned in and up to 150 g scooped and packed - a guessed weight adds an error. Cups become ml, which is exact. Switch on Show grams for flour, sugar, brown sugar, icing sugar, butter and rice, where typical weights are well known.
Do I need to convert tablespoons and teaspoons?
No. A US tablespoon is 14.8 ml and a teaspoon 4.9 ml; South African spoons are 15 ml and 5 ml. The difference is under 2% - use your normal spoons.
Is an ounce weight or volume?
An ounce (oz) is weight: 28.35 g. A fluid ounce (fl oz) is volume: 29.6 ml in a US recipe. When a US recipe gives a liquid in plain oz it usually means fluid ounces.
